The Male Panel on Marriage and Conflict!

The Male Panel lets us in on what they think marriage is and what they believe is the best way to resolve conflict within a relationship.

Question 1: Complete the sentence: Marriage is .........

Joe: ... inviting another person to join you in every aspect of your life. You will never be alone ever again facing any challenge.

Peter: Yes, marriage most certainly IS a sentence, and it won’t ever be completed, because there is no remission for good conduct. But you knew I’d say that, right? Okay, seriously. Marriage is about making a life together. Is marriage a realistic construct today? I don’t know. I still think we could take another look at the way it works in the wild, where the males form coalitions, and the females form groups with the young. And then mating season is a blast. And yes, I’m being serious. The older and possibly wiser I get, the more I realise that there are huge fundamental differences between males and females. And that is a problem.

Colin: Marriage is a long, LONG way away.

Question 2: Everyone has a different way of handling conflict - sulking, shouting down the other person, avoidance, keeping the peace etc. What's yours?

Joe: Avoidance. It's very easy to just stop talking. Of course, it drives my other half NUTS. So in that sense it works :)

Peter: I hate conflict. I’m not good at it. I try to keep the peace. On the other hand, my doctor once sat me down and told me that the best way of dealing with rampaging hormonally unstable women – is there any other kind? - is to go completely cold and quiet. You’d be amazed at how well it works, guys! Oh, wait, this is a column for girls. Right. Look, what you do is you apologise profusely to your husband / partner, and go and pour him a stiff scotch and rub his feet and bat your eyelashes. All leading up to that lo-o-o-o-ng slow BJ, natch.

Colin: A gag usually sorts the problem out pretty effectively.
